Utah Bill of Sale
Selling or buying a vehicle in Utah? Here is what Utah DMV says about the paperwork, and a free generator to make a signed bill of sale in minutes.
Quick answer
Bill of sale in Utah: Recommended, not stated required. Utah DMV describes a bill of sale and offers Form TC-843, and tax is based on the net price on it. The page we read does not say it is mandatory.
What Utah requires for a vehicle sale
- The DMV says a bill of sale should include buyer and seller names and addresses, seller signature, vehicle description with VIN, price and trade-in details; Form TC-843 is available.
- It can be handwritten or printed, in ink.
- With a bill of sale, sales tax is based on the net price on it. Without one, the DMV uses the vehicle's fair market value, which the buyer can dispute with an appraisal.
- The DMV says no notary is needed to sign off on a title.
- Sellers must complete and sign the odometer statement (Form TC-891); cars 20 years old or older do not need the federal disclosure.
- Utah law gives sellers 48 hours to deliver the title. Sellers report the sale to the DMV online (MVP), by mail with TC-502 or a signed notice, or by phone.
- Private sellers do not collect sales tax; the buyer pays it when titling and registering.
Utah bill of sale: what to include
Whatever Utah requires, a signed bill of sale protects both sides. It proves the price, the date and that the car was sold as-is. Include:
- Seller's and buyer's full names and addresses
- Year, make, model, color and VIN
- Odometer reading on the day of sale
- Sale price and date of sale
- As-is wording, plus a statement that the seller owns the vehicle and any lien is paid off
- Signatures and dates for both parties
Sample as-is wording
I, the seller, sell the vehicle described above to the buyer for the price shown, as-is, with no warranty, express or implied. The seller confirms they are the owner and that the odometer reading is correct to the best of their knowledge. This sale is made under the laws of Utah.

- Report the sale to the DMV via MVP, TC-502 or phone.
Buyer checklist (Utah)
- Get the negotiable title and check the VIN matches.

- The notary statement on the DMV page covers signing off a title; it does not mention notarizing the bill of sale.
