New York Bill of Sale
Selling or buying a vehicle in New York? Here is what New York DMV says about the paperwork, and a free generator to make a signed bill of sale in minutes.
Quick answer
Bill of sale in New York: Yes: MV-912. A bill of sale is part of the process. The buyer must sign MV-912 (Vehicle Bill of Sale) in all cases, and the seller signs it too unless other acceptable proof of transfer is provided.
What New York requires for a vehicle sale
- The seller either signs the title's transfer section and MV-912, or provides other acceptable proofs of ownership and transfer.
- The buyer must sign MV-912 in all cases, including gifts.
- The bill of sale lists the year and make, the VIN, the sale date, the purchase price, and the names and signatures of buyer and seller.
- The buyer gives the original to the DMV when titling and registering. Both sides may keep photocopies.
- For a gift, show a price of $0 and say it is a gift. The donor must also complete Section 6 of DTF-802 if the vehicle is a gift, or is sold below fair market value, to someone other than a spouse, parent, child, stepparent or stepchild.
New York bill of sale: what to include
Whatever New York requires, a signed bill of sale protects both sides. It proves the price, the date and that the car was sold as-is. Include:
- Seller's and buyer's full names and addresses
- Year, make, model, color and VIN
- Odometer reading on the day of sale
- Sale price and date of sale
- As-is wording, plus a statement that the seller owns the vehicle and any lien is paid off
- Signatures and dates for both parties (MV-912 asks for both)
Sample as-is wording
I, the seller, sell the vehicle described above to the buyer for the price shown, as-is, with no warranty, express or implied. The seller confirms they are the owner and that the odometer reading is correct to the best of their knowledge. This sale is made under the laws of New York.
