Iowa Bill of Sale
Selling or buying a vehicle in Iowa? Here is what Iowa DOT says about the paperwork, and a free generator to make a signed bill of sale in minutes.
Quick answer
Bill of sale in Iowa: Part of the title paperwork. Iowa DOT lists a bill of sale on the Iowa title, or a purchase agreement, among the buyer's documents for a used vehicle. The page we read does not state a standalone form number for it.
What Iowa requires for a vehicle sale
- For a used vehicle with an Iowa title, the buyer brings a signed title, a bill of sale on the title or a purchase agreement, form 411007 and the odometer statement.
- The seller signs the reverse of the title, prints the buyer's name and address and the sale date, and gives the odometer and damage disclosure statements.
- The seller removes the plates and turns them in to the county treasurer. The checklist suggests proof of sale: a buyer receipt, a copy of the title back, or Notice of Sale form 411107.
- Through 2030, vehicles of model year 2011 or newer need an odometer disclosure, made on the title.
- Damage disclosure form 411108 is required for used vehicles 8 years old or newer.
- A Black Hawk County page says errors or alterations on a title may require notarization.
Iowa bill of sale: what to include
Whatever Iowa requires, a signed bill of sale protects both sides. It proves the price, the date and that the car was sold as-is. Include:
- Seller's and buyer's full names and addresses
- Year, make, model, color and VIN
- Odometer reading on the day of sale
- Sale price and date of sale
- As-is wording, plus a statement that the seller owns the vehicle and any lien is paid off
- Signatures and dates for both parties
Sample as-is wording
I, the seller, sell the vehicle described above to the buyer for the price shown, as-is, with no warranty, express or implied. The seller confirms they are the owner and that the odometer reading is correct to the best of their knowledge. This sale is made under the laws of Iowa.
