Arizona Bill of Sale

Selling or buying a vehicle in Arizona? Here is what ADOT Motor Vehicle Division says about the paperwork, and a free generator to make a signed bill of sale in minutes.

Quick answer

Bill of sale in Arizona: Optional, notarized if used. The MVD pages we read center on the signed title and a Sold Notice. A Title Transfer Bill of Sale is mentioned for Arizona-titled vehicles, and MVD says it must be signed and notarized if one is provided.

What Arizona requires for a vehicle sale

  • MVD says the seller signs the back of the paper title and gives it to the buyer, who takes it to an MVD or Third Party office to finish the transfer.
  • MVD lists a Title Transfer Bill of Sale as available only for Arizona-titled vehicles. The page does not give a form number.
  • MVD's used vehicle page says a title transfer bill of sale, if provided, must be signed and notarized.
  • The seller submits a Sold Notice as soon as ownership transfers. MVD gives no specific deadline. You need the buyer's name and address.
  • The seller removes the license plate before the buyer takes possession.
  • Odometer: record the actual reading, never an estimate. MVD says it is required by law for model year 2011 and newer and recommended for older vehicles.
  • A private-sale buyer must apply for a title within 15 days of purchase. The old registration is invalid, so the buyer registers or buys a Restricted Use 3-Day Permit before driving.

Arizona bill of sale: what to include

Whatever Arizona requires, a signed bill of sale protects both sides. It proves the price, the date and that the car was sold as-is. Include:

  • Seller's and buyer's full names and addresses
  • Year, make, model, color and VIN
  • Odometer reading on the day of sale
  • Sale price and date of sale
  • As-is wording, plus a statement that the seller owns the vehicle and any lien is paid off
  • Signatures and dates for both parties

Sample as-is wording

I, the seller, sell the vehicle described above to the buyer for the price shown, as-is, with no warranty, express or implied. The seller confirms they are the owner and that the odometer reading is correct to the best of their knowledge. This sale is made under the laws of Arizona.

Seller checklist (Arizona)

  • Sign the back of the title, or use the eTitle Transfer if you are eligible.
  • Record the actual odometer reading on the title.
  • Remove your license plate before the buyer drives away.
  • Submit a Sold Notice online or at an MVD or Third Party office, with the buyer's name and address.
  • Apply for a registration refund if you are eligible.

Buyer checklist (Arizona)

  • Get the signed title and check that it shows no lien.
  • Do not drive until you register the vehicle or buy a Restricted Use 3-Day Permit.
  • Apply for a new certificate of title within 15 days of purchase.
  • Ask MVD which documents to bring and what taxes and fees apply, because the pages we read do not say.

Things to watch in Arizona

  • The pages we read do not say a bill of sale is required, and they do not list its contents or give its form number.
  • The pages we read do not list buyer documents, taxes, or a deadline for the Sold Notice. Check with MVD.
