Florida Bill of Sale

Selling or buying a vehicle in Florida? Here is what FLHSMV says about the paperwork, and a free generator to make a signed bill of sale in minutes.

Quick answer

Bill of sale in Florida: Not mentioned; Notice of Sale is required. The FLHSMV pages we read do not list a bill of sale as required. Florida law does require the seller to file a Notice of Sale (HSMV 82050) so their name comes off the vehicle.

What Florida requires for a vehicle sale

  • Florida law has required sellers to file a Notice of Sale since July 2009. It removes the seller's registration from the vehicle so they are no longer liable.
  • The Notice of Sale is Form HSMV 82050, available from FLHSMV's forms page.
  • The license plate belongs to the individual, not the vehicle, and can be moved to another vehicle. The seller should remove it.
  • The odometer reading should be accurately shown on the title at the time of sale.
  • If the vehicle was not previously titled in Florida, a Vehicle Identification Number and Odometer Verification is also needed.

Florida bill of sale: what to include

Whatever Florida requires, a signed bill of sale protects both sides. It proves the price, the date and that the car was sold as-is. Include:

  • Seller's and buyer's full names and addresses
  • Year, make, model, color and VIN
  • Odometer reading on the day of sale
  • Sale price and date of sale
  • As-is wording, plus a statement that the seller owns the vehicle and any lien is paid off
  • Signatures and dates for both parties

Sample as-is wording

I, the seller, sell the vehicle described above to the buyer for the price shown, as-is, with no warranty, express or implied. The seller confirms they are the owner and that the odometer reading is correct to the best of their knowledge. This sale is made under the laws of Florida.
