Louisiana Bill of Sale
Selling or buying a vehicle in Louisiana? Here is what Louisiana OMV says about the paperwork, and a free generator to make a signed bill of sale in minutes.
Quick answer
Bill of sale in Louisiana: Required, notarized, unless price is on title. Louisiana OMV lists a notarized bill of sale or invoice as a document for a used-vehicle title, unless the selling price is shown on the title assignment. The seller's title assignment must also be notarized.
What Louisiana requires for a vehicle sale
- OMV lists an original notarized bill of sale or invoice stating the actual price and a full vehicle description. It is not needed if the selling price is on the title assignment.
- The title must be assigned before a notary by the seller to the purchaser. If the bill of sale, invoice, or title is notarized, the file is acceptable.
- The buyer submits Vehicle Application DPSMV 1799 plus the seller's documents to OMV, an OMV office, or a Public Tag Agent.
- If the title has no odometer disclosure and the vehicle is not exempt, a supplemental Odometer Statement is needed. The page gives no form number for it.
- Listed fees include a $68.50 title fee and an $8.00 handling fee. Local fees up to $6.00 may apply. Sales and use tax depends on the vehicle's domicile.
- The seller can file a Notice of Vehicle Transfer online, which flags the OMV record right away. Ownership is not legally transferred until the new owner applies for title.
Louisiana bill of sale: what to include
Whatever Louisiana requires, a signed bill of sale protects both sides. It proves the price, the date and that the car was sold as-is. Include:
- Seller's and buyer's full names and addresses
- Year, make, model, color and VIN
- Odometer reading on the day of sale
- Sale price and date of sale
- As-is wording, plus a statement that the seller owns the vehicle and any lien is paid off
- Signatures and dates for both parties
Sample as-is wording
I, the seller, sell the vehicle described above to the buyer for the price shown, as-is, with no warranty, express or implied. The seller confirms they are the owner and that the odometer reading is correct to the best of their knowledge. This sale is made under the laws of Louisiana.
