Oregon Bill of Sale
Selling or buying a vehicle in Oregon? Here is what Oregon DMV (ODOT) says about the paperwork, and a free generator to make a signed bill of sale in minutes.
Quick answer
Bill of sale in Oregon: Only if seller is not on title. Oregon DMV requires a bill of sale only when the seller's name is not on the title. DMV's Vehicle Bill of Sale is form 501, and the seller must notify DMV of the sale within 10 days.
What Oregon requires for a vehicle sale
- If the seller's name is not on the title, the buyer needs a bill of sale with at least the VIN, a release of interest, the seller's printed name and signature, and the sale date.
- DMV's Vehicle Bill of Sale is form 501 (735-501); a separate document with the same information also works.
- The seller signs and dates either the back of the title or a bill of sale.
- For model year 2011 or newer vehicles under 20 years old, the odometer reading goes on the back of the title and both buyer and seller sign it.
- The seller must notify DMV through DMV2U within 10 days, with the buyer's name and address. The seller stays listed as owner until the buyer transfers the title.
- The buyer must apply for title within 30 days; the form notes a late title transfer fee may apply. The seller may remove license plates before selling.
Oregon bill of sale: what to include
Whatever Oregon requires, a signed bill of sale protects both sides. It proves the price, the date and that the car was sold as-is. Include:
- Seller's and buyer's full names and addresses
- Year, make, model, color and VIN
- Odometer reading on the day of sale
- Sale price and date of sale
- As-is wording, plus a statement that the seller owns the vehicle and any lien is paid off
- Signatures and dates for both parties
Sample as-is wording
I, the seller, sell the vehicle described above to the buyer for the price shown, as-is, with no warranty, express or implied. The seller confirms they are the owner and that the odometer reading is correct to the best of their knowledge. This sale is made under the laws of Oregon.
