Montana Bill of Sale
Selling or buying a vehicle in Montana? Here is what Montana MVD says about the paperwork, and a free generator to make a signed bill of sale in minutes.
Quick answer
Bill of sale in Montana: Optional; required in one case. Montana MVD does not require a bill of sale for a standard sale but recommends a written sale record. MV24 is offered as an optional form and is required only for a replacement-title exception.
What Montana requires for a vehicle sale
- MVD recommends a written record of the sale, such as a photocopy of the reassigned title or a bill of sale; MV24 Bill of Sale is offered as a convenient option.
- MV24 is required only when the seller transfers using the replacement exception for a Montana vehicle sold to a Montana resident.
- All owners must sign the title, in blue or black ink only; white-out or erasures void the title.
- Mileage must be disclosed on vehicles newer than nine years (2011 or newer).
- The buyer has 40 days from the sale date to transfer ownership at the County Treasurer; a $10 late fee applies after 40 days.
- MVD materials say Montana titles do not require notarization as of October 2025.
- The seller must remove license plates; the plates belong to the seller, not the vehicle.
Montana bill of sale: what to include
Whatever Montana requires, a signed bill of sale protects both sides. It proves the price, the date and that the car was sold as-is. Include:
- Seller's and buyer's full names and addresses
- Year, make, model, color and VIN
- Odometer reading on the day of sale
- Sale price and date of sale
- As-is wording, plus a statement that the seller owns the vehicle and any lien is paid off
- Signatures and dates for both parties
Sample as-is wording
I, the seller, sell the vehicle described above to the buyer for the price shown, as-is, with no warranty, express or implied. The seller confirms they are the owner and that the odometer reading is correct to the best of their knowledge. This sale is made under the laws of Montana.

- Keep a written sale record, such as a title photocopy or MV24.

- Compare the odometer, title mileage and VIN.
- Carry liability insurance and buy new plates.
- Title and register at the County Treasurer in your county of residence within 40 days of the sale.
Things to watch in Montana

- They do not describe a formal notice of sale or release of liability form; MVD suggests removing plates and cancelling insurance instead.
