Alaska Bill of Sale
Selling or buying a vehicle in Alaska? Here is what Alaska DMV says about the paperwork, and a free generator to make a signed bill of sale in minutes.
Quick answer
Bill of sale in Alaska: Recommended, not valid alone. Alaska DMV says a bill of sale is not valid for transferring ownership, but recommends one anyway. A buyer without a dealer temporary registration submits one with the V1 application.
What Alaska requires for a vehicle sale
- Alaska DMV says a bill of sale is not valid for transferring ownership but recommends one. It should show the serial number and description, printed names, date of sale and both signatures.
- The seller signs the title assignment and completes the Notice of Vehicle Sale for Transfer on the bottom of the title. DMV asks that it be sent as soon as possible.
- For a private sale with no dealer temporary registration, the buyer submits the V1 application with a Bill of Sale or Dealership Purchase Agreement.
- Alaska residents must transfer the vehicle into their name within 30 days of the date of sale by obtaining an Alaska title.
- Odometer: the seller discloses the reading on the reassigned title and the buyer acknowledges it. Form V6 is needed if the disclosure is not on the title.
- The seller must certify the odometer reading for vehicles less than ten years old. DMV cannot transfer the title if the assignment is incomplete.
- Seller removes personalized or specialty plates. The pages we read do not mention notarization.
Alaska bill of sale: what to include
Whatever Alaska requires, a signed bill of sale protects both sides. It proves the price, the date and that the car was sold as-is. Include:
- Seller's and buyer's full names and addresses
- Year, make, model, color and VIN
- Odometer reading on the day of sale
- Sale price and date of sale
- As-is wording, plus a statement that the seller owns the vehicle and any lien is paid off
- Signatures and dates for both parties
Sample as-is wording
I, the seller, sell the vehicle described above to the buyer for the price shown, as-is, with no warranty, express or implied. The seller confirms they are the owner and that the odometer reading is correct to the best of their knowledge. This sale is made under the laws of Alaska.
