What is the Salary Calculator?

Your gross salary is not what lands in your bank account. This calculator estimates take-home pay for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia using the tax rules of the country you select at the top of the page, including social contributions such as National Insurance, CPP and EI, FICA or the Medicare levy.

Gross pay and take-home pay

Your gross salary is the figure in your job offer. Your net, or take-home, pay is what reaches your bank account after income tax and social contributions are deducted. The gap can be large, and it changes by country, by region and by how much you contribute to a pension. This calculator shows the main deductions line by line so you can see where the money goes.

What is taken out in each country

  • United States: federal income tax plus FICA (Social Security and Medicare). State and local taxes vary, so you can add your own rate.
  • United Kingdom: income tax, National Insurance and, if you have one, a student loan or pension contribution.
  • Canada: federal and provincial income tax, Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Employment Insurance (EI).
  • Australia: income tax and the Medicare levy. Employer superannuation is paid on top and is not taken from your pay.

Use it to compare job offers

Enter each offer's gross salary and the pension or retirement contribution to compare the take-home pay. A higher salary in a high-tax region can leave you with less than a lower salary somewhere else. Remember benefits: health insurance, pension matching and paid leave can be worth thousands a year even though they do not appear in your net pay.

Pre-tax contributions

Contributions to a pension plan, 401(k) or RRSP are usually taken before income tax, so they reduce your tax bill. Enter them in the calculator to see the true cost: a contribution of 100 may reduce your take-home pay by less than 100.

How accurate is it?

It is an estimate using standard rates and allowances for a single person with no other income. Real pay depends on your tax code, credits, benefits and the exact tax year, so your payslip can differ. Use it for planning and negotiation, and check your final figure with your employer or an accountant. To turn an hourly rate into a salary, try the Hourly to Salary Calculator.

Tips for better results

Pre-tax pension, RRSP or 401(k) contributions lower the tax you pay, so enter them to see the true net pay.

Provincial and state taxes vary a lot. For Canada and the US enter your own average rate for an estimate that matches your location.

Frequently asked questions

How is take-home pay calculated?

Take the gross salary, subtract pre-tax contributions, then subtract income tax and social contributions for your country.

Why is my payslip different from the result?

The calculator uses standard rates for one person with no other income. Your tax code, credits, benefits and the tax year can change the real figure.

Does a 401(k) or pension contribution reduce my tax?

Usually yes. These contributions are taken before income tax, so your take-home pay falls by less than the amount you put in.

How do I compare two job offers?

Enter each gross salary and your contributions, then compare the net pay. Also count benefits such as health insurance and paid leave.

Does it include state or provincial tax?

For the United States and Canada you can enter your own average rate for an estimate that matches your location.

What do I enter in the salary calculator?

You enter Gross Annual Salary, State Income Tax Rate (%) and Pre-tax Deductions per Year. The result updates as you type, so you can change one number and see the effect straight away.

What result does the salary calculator give for example numbers?

With the starting example (Gross Annual Salary $75,000, State Income Tax Rate (%) 5 and Pre-tax Deductions per Year $0), it shows Net annual pay of $57,842.50, along with Gross salary $75,000.00, Pre-tax deductions $0.00, Federal income tax $7,670.00 and State income tax $3,750.00. These are the US defaults; change the inputs to match your own situation.
